Delphics Malaysia
Where traditions thrive together in harmony and pride.
Country Overview
Malaysia is a Southeast Asian country located just north of the Equator, composed of two non-contiguous regions: Peninsular Malaysia (also called West Malaysia) on the Malay Peninsula, and East Malaysia on the island of Borneo. The capital city is Kuala Lumpur, situated in the western part of the peninsula. Malaysia gained independence from British rule on August 31, 1957, and expanded in 1963 to include Sabah and Sarawak, forming the modern federation.
Geography
Malaysia's geographical extent spans both mainland Southeast Asia and the maritime region of Borneo. The country features diverse landscapes including tropical rainforests, mountain ranges, coastal reefs, and urban centers. Malaysia is home to four UNESCO World Heritage Sites including Gunung Mulu National Park, Kinabalu Park, the historic cities of Melaka and George Town, and the Lenggong Valley archaeological site.
Language & Culture
Malaysia is a multicultural nation with Malay (Bahasa Malaysia) as the official language, reflecting its diverse population of Malay, Chinese, Indian, and indigenous communities. The national culture is rooted in Malay heritage while embracing the contributions of all ethnic groups. Malaysian culture emphasizes harmony, tolerance, and the preservation of traditional values alongside modern development. The national dish is Nasi Lemak, featuring fragrant coconut rice served with fried anchovies, boiled egg, cucumber, and sambal sauce.
Arts & Crafts
Traditional Malaysian arts center on carving, weaving, and silversmithing, ranging from handwoven baskets to ornamental kris daggers and beetle nut sets. Iconic crafts include Batik (hand-dyed fabric with intricate patterns), Songket (luxurious woven textiles with gold and silver threads worn at ceremonies), Wau (traditional decorative kites), and wood carving. These crafts play significant roles in festivals, weddings, and celebrations, serving as expressions of creativity and cultural preservation.
Major Festivals
Malaysia celebrates a rich calendar of multicultural festivals including Thaipusam (Tamil festival honoring Lord Muruga at Batu Caves), Chinese New Year (featuring lion dances and lantern festivals), Hari Raya Aidilfitri (marking the end of Ramadan), Deepavali (Festival of Lights), and National Day on August 31. The Citrawarna (Colours of Malaysia) festival held in May and June showcases all 14 states' cultural traditions through parades, songs, and dances at Dataran Merdeka in Kuala Lumpur. The Rainforest World Music Festival and Sarawak Gawai Festival highlight the country's indigenous heritage and global artistic connections.
Fun Facts
Malaysia contains the world's largest cave chamber—the Sarawak Cave Chamber in Gunung Mulu National Park—which can accommodate 40 Boeing 747s. The country has over 65,877 kilometers of highway roads, more than 1.5 times around Earth's circumference. Malaysia is home to several "floating" mosques, including the Tengku Tengah Zaharah Mosque in Kuala Terengganu, which sits on waterfront land creating the illusion of floating. Famous shoe designer Jimmy Choo was born in Penang, and the critically endangered Malayan Tiger (with only around 350 remaining) is unique to the country.
